For every person who thinks the little Argentinian is the best, another will disagree and say it's CR7's title.
That being said, in a four-way SPORTbible Twitter poll, 26,104 people voted for their GOAT and five-time Balon d'Or winner Lionel Messi came out on top with 44% of the vote, Ronaldo 36%, Pele 15% and Maradona 6% etc.
But what does former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes think about the comparison?
Despite playing with Ronaldo for a number of years during his time at Old Trafford, the now-BT Sport pundit believes Messi is the better out of the two, hailing his all round game.
In an interview with ESPN, Scholes said the three players he enjoys most watching, before stating the following about Cristiano and Leo:
"Modric, [Toni] Kroos, Messi. Watching Messi against Tottenham at Wembley made me think about the Messi and [Cristiano] Ronaldo debate again," Scholes said.
"Messi (is the best) but Ronaldo is brilliant. Ronaldo is sensational at what he does, with pace and power.
"He scores, he takes free-kicks. But as an all-round footballer, Messi - wow, his passing - has absolutely everything."
Scholes went on to take a swipe at his former club's current situation, claiming that Messi would even struggle at Old Trafford.
Let's get another perspective on the debate. Pep Guardiola knows Lionel Messi better than most. Between 2008 and 2012, the former Barcelona manager guided the 30-year-old to Ballon d'Ors and Champions League trophies.
It was a relationship that blossomed from day one.
Messi was Guardiola's biggest fan, and vice versa. Pep knew how to manage this incredibly gifted Argentine during his time at the Camp Nou and the numbers speak for themselves.
The current Manchester City manager has once again spoken about the five time Ballon d'Or winner in a great light, referring to him as 'the best player' he has ever seen.
In an interview with L'Esportiu, Guardiola explained why Lionel Messi is the very best:
"He is the best player I have ever seen."
"The best thing about him is not what he does but how simple he makes everything look."
"He is not just the best player because he can dribble past three or four players, it is because he does it better than anyone in the world."
The Ronaldo vs Messi debate will live on forever, but Guardiola thinks that Messi comes out on top in the rivalry.
