Whilst Lionel Messi is also said to have been snubbed with the most prestigious individual prize in the game set for a historic new winner.
It has been 11 years since Kaka lifted the famous golden ball before a duopoly followed with Messi and Ronaldo sharing five apiece over the next decade.
But Luka Modric looks to have a clear run now at picking up the Ballon d'Or to go with his The Best FIFA Award.
Joining him on the podium are a couple of the protagonists from France's World Cup triumph.
Tuttosport believe Kylian Mbappe and Raphael Varane will join Modric on the final shortlist.
There appears to be a desire from the football community for a new star to win the prize too, with Edinson Cavani's view that a French player should win.
"Varane may well be there, Griezmann, Mbappe... I think a Frenchman should win," the PSG striker told RMC .
"There are other players who could win it, but it should be a Frenchman, they have won the World Cup.
"Modric has had a great season, but his team-mate Varane won the Champions League and the World Cup. Modric was a finalist and had a great campaign, but Varane deserves it more."
The order is not clear though, but Modric is the favourite, after RFIreported that half the votes had been collated by November 9 and the Real Madrid and Croatia maestro was currently top of the list, with his club team-mate Varane the runner-up and PSG sensation Mbappe third.
