Manchester City's footballer Raheem Sterling has received support from sportswear giants Nike after he was allegedly racially abused by Chelsea fans at their Stamford Bridge stadium earlier this month. The forward has been supported by fans all across the globe, and most recently by "Pep" Guardiola, the "Citizens" manager.
Nike, the sportswear company that represents the player, has expressed its support for Sterling by releasing an advertisement very similar to the one done to support former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The advertisement was posted on Nike's Instagram page, and features the Manchester City winger complete with the motto, "Speaking up doesn't always make life easier. But easy never changed anything."
Sterling earlier criticized certain media corporations for encouraging "racism and aggressive behavior," and highlighted two specific articles on his social media, saying some sections of the media "help fuel racism and aggressive behavior, and for the newspapers that don’t understand why people are racist in this day and age all I have to say is have a second thought about fair publicity and give all players an equal chance."
Spanish coach Josep "Pep" Guardiola, praised the striker's cool head and calmness, after a week of stress and attacks, as well as showing support, to the footballer. "I see him so calm," said Guardiola. “I think he has handled in the last years many situations, rumors, people saying not nice things about him, his family or, in that case, the color of his skin; so that is why I admire him. He is calm, happy playing, beloved in the locker room, so it is good.”
Sterling pointed out how the news treats white players and black players differently, "Look how the newspapers get their message across for the young black player and then for the young white payer," adding that "this young black kid is looked at in a bad light." He ended his post by demanding equality, "give all players an equal chance."
